Hayley Gene Penner is a Canadian singer, songwriter and author who grew up sharing the stage with her father, renowned children's entertainer Fred Penner. As a songwriter, she is known for writing with and for artists including The Chicks, Sabrina Claudio, Lennon Stella, Charlotte Lawrence, The Chainsmokers and Alina Baraz. Her debut album, and her memoir's namesake, People You Follow, was released in September 2020 in concert with the book, out in the US October 13, 2020. Her memoir reads like vignettes of the self-destructive, self-protective, morally slippery things we do as young women trying to figure ourselves out in the 21st Century. Whether she’s being rolled up in a carpet in an abandoned house, watching a naked celebrity eat Oreos in a fancy hotel room or trying to find an emergency room in Paris, these stories are decidedly hilarious and heart breaking all at once.
